David Pool

Head Coach

David has been coaching for 15 years. This journey has taken him around the world holding positions in Great Britain, Australia, Canada and latterly Hong Kong. He has developed an excellent knowledge of swimming and the structure of sport throughout the world.


David’s philosophy on training and developing swimmers is based on a holistic approach to managing all the facets that lead to performance. This includes the obvious technical development, skill development, physiological needs, sports psychology, recovery, sleep optimization, stress control, nutrition and strength and power development on land.


David’s aim is to help each student athlete realize their full potential, both as a competitive swimmer and as a human being. To develop integrity and responsibility, he will strive to encourage self-awareness in all stages of the training process and encourage athletes to take ownership of their preparation and performance. With the right inspiration, he believes Stingrays kids can make their dreams come true.


During his time on-deck, he has guided his athletes towards great performances in the water while ensuring they continue to excel in their academic goals. Many of his swimmers have gone on to study at top universities in GB, AUS, USA and CAN. Some have also represented their countries at many International meets.

Marvin Johnson

Marvin has been coaching swimming for 15 years. his coaching career started in South African, where he coached at the Barracuda Swimming club before moving to Hong Kong, where he has coached for 12 years.


His coaching philosophy is focused on Long Term Athlete Development and creating a challenging and goal orientated environment to allow swimmers to excel and reach their full potential.


Swimming has afforded many opportunities and experiences. Through those experiences, he hopes to share and teach valuable life lessons and skills to help them succeed inside and outside of the pool through my coaching.

Ethan Lam

Ethan has more than 10 years of teaching and coaching experience and has been working with Stingrays within the Learn to Swim program for over three years and has shown a great commitment regularly volunteering to help at Squad sessions to assist our younger swimmer and continue his own professional development. We are excited to have him as part of our coaching team. Apart from swimming, he enjoys reading and learning languages.

Celeste Lam

Team Manager

Celeste has been a dedicated athlete her entire life, with a particular passion for swimming. Beginning her training at age ten, she has consistently been an active and valued competitive member of various swim teams, from local clubs to high school and university teams. Her lifelong commitment and love to swimming led her to Stingrays.


Prior to joining Stingrays, Celeste held part-time coaching and key administrative roles at a prestigious local private club. Celeste's comprehensive sports background, coupled with her expertise in Sports Science, makes her an ideal addition to our team. She will collaborate closely with our coaching staff and maintain consistent communication with all members and swimmers.

Frankie Murphy

Assistant Head Coach

Frankie joined Hong Kong Island Stingrays in 2013 as the Age Group Coach and Learn to Swim Coordinator. Prior to joining Stingrays, Frankie had been with England’s Portsmouth Northsea Swimming Club, where she also coached the Age Group Squad and Learn to Swim programme. Born and raised in the UK, Frankie swam from a young age before competing nationally and reaching Olympic trials.


Frankie’s focus on individualisation ensures each swimmer has their programme structured accordingly allowing for the very best results in all aspects of swimming.


With her natural ability to connect with children, Frankie is eager to share her love for the sport with her swimmers while continuing to expand and develop all areas of the programme.

Luke Wimbush

HS Team Coach

As an athlete and coach he sees strength as fundamental for swimmers to reach peak performance. All things being equal a stronger athlete will always win, so developing functional strength in the gym and harnessing that power in the water will result in faster times.

Mike Sigournay

Strength & Conditioning Coach

Mike moved from the UK to study in the USA while on an athletic scholarship and has gained 12+ years of coaching experience across a variety of sports in the USA, UK and China.


Having worked with athletes at both youth and professional levels, Mike has developed a vast knowledge of the differing strength and conditioning requirements needed for individual athletes to maximise their potential and performance. 


Mike’s coaching principles stem from an understanding that the phases of an athletes journey will never be straightforward and a successful training programme must evolve and adapt to the challenges faced.


By establishing a foundation through the development of fundamental movement skills and core strength, each athlete will have the tools necessary for success. Mike then modifies each programme and session to meet the specific goals of each athlete and aims to instill a desire to always want to improve, test individual limits and achieve the highest level of attainment possible.
